How to avoid accidents in the warehouse-part I

To show how much awareness of health and safety in logistic and warehouse jobs is important, as an example, we will observe statistic study from Great Brittan that included injuries and their causes of workers employed in mentioned fields.

Research included period of 5 years, from 2009/10 to 2013/14 and considered only injuries that employers reported to HSE, also should be considered that more than 50% of total injuries that are not fatal are not being reported.

Types of accidents between 2009/10 – 2013/14

During the period of 2009/10 to 2013/14, biggest cause of fatal injuries of people working in logistics sector is contact with transportation vehicle, also should be emphasize that 41 out of 44 happened in warehouse and transportation jobs.

Slips or tripping are the most common cause leading to severe injury (this is also the most common type of serious injurie within all industries). This cause has about two-thirds of serious injuries in the fields of logistics, such as the postal, courier and water transport, while in the transport and warehousing has a little more than one-third.

Fall from height, injuries while handling the material and contact with a subject that is falling from a height represent quite frequent causes of serious injuries in the fields of transport and storage.

Slips and tripping is also most often lead to absence of workers for more than 7 days in the fields of logistics, such as the postal, courier and water transport. On the other hand, in the field of transport and warehousing cause of the injuries of the same severity is improper material handling.

Dangerous points in the warehouse

Operations within the storage areas include a large number of potential hazards to workers.

Loading ramps

Hazard: injuries occur when forklifts slip from the ramp, when the goods falls on the employee or when the equipment comes into contact with employees.


  • Drive the forklift slower ramp and hydraulic plates;
  • Ensure that the hydraulic ramps are working properly and that they can withstand the load;
  • Keep away from the edge of the ramp and do not approach them too close when forklift is going backwards;
  • Provide a visual warning signs near the edges of the ramp;
  • Prohibit employees "jumping from the ramps;"
  • Ensure that the stairs and access ramps elements meet prescribed standards.


Danger: In the US, about 100 employees will lose his life, and 95,000 are hurt each year in handling forklift within all industries. A large percentage of these accidents counted situation when it comes to overturning forklift.


• To train, evaluate and certify each operator to ensure that they are able to operate a forklift safely;

• Do not allow persons under 18 years operated a forklift;

• Properly maintain equipment, including excavators;

• Before using a forklift, to check whether it is in a condition that would make it dangerous to manage;

• Follow safety procedures for lifting, disposal and storage of goods;
